hypothetically speaking

Will the next president be a woman?

Toronto, Canada - June 20, 20131. SOUNDBITE: (English)
Hillary Clinton, Former Secretary of State
"Let me say this, hypothetically speaking, I really do hope that we have a woman president in my lifetime. And whether it's next time or the next time after that, it really depends on women stepping and subjecting themselves to the political process, which is very difficult.

You know, one of my great predecessors, Eleanor Roosevelt, said as far back as the 1920s, women want to be in politics, they need to grow skin as thick as a Rhinoceros, and I think there is still truth to that, so you have to step up, you have to dare to compete, you have to get into the process and then the country, our country, has to take that leap of faith.

We did have a historic election with the election of President Obama, which was incredibly important for all the obvious reasons given our past. And I hope that we will see a woman elected because I think it would send exactly the right historic signal to girls, women as well as boys and men. And I will certainly vote for the right woman to be president (cheers, HRC smiles)."

It was a crowd that was receptive to such a message, even if she gave no hint — beyond the playful “hypothetical” and “right woman” remarks — that she was talking about herself.

5,000 people who attendedと5,000 or so fans and supporters were in attendanceとが使われています。

The Torontoist blog reports Clinton got a standing ovation from about 5,000 people who attended the Unique Lives & Experiences event, billed as North America's "foremost women's lecture series."

********

Thursday night at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre—where Clinton spoke as part of the Unique Lives & Experiences lecture series—5,000 or so fans and supporters were in attendance, many likely hoping for some sort of confirmation (or hint) that she might be making a second run at the U.S. presidency in 2016.

話せば長くなりそうな難しい質問をされた時には彼女が使った“Can you stay here until breakfast?”

Hillary Clinton Speaks at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre
During a wide-ranging talk and interview, Hillary Clinton charmed a Toronto audience of thousands.
BY KYLE BACHAN

After Clinton had finished speaking, Nutt returned to the stage for a Q and A. First question: what is the unfinished business of the women’s movement? Clinton’s answer: “Can you stay here until breakfast?” She explained the continuous struggles that women face around the world and the opportunities that women are denied, particularly in the political realm (something Toronto can relate to). When asked how she manages to cope with sexism in the media, like when she was criticized for not wearing makeup, she responded bluntly, “I don’t care anymore.” She went on, however, to condemn ongoing sexist attacks against Julia Gillard, Australia’s first woman Prime Minister. “We should never dehumanize anyone,” Clinton said.

On her biggest accomplishment as Secretary of State: “Restoring America’s reputation in the world,” she said. One thing that she wishes she could do over? She’d spend more time outdoors. On whether women lead better than men, she said she finds women more likely to seek consensus. Will the next president be a woman? (Which was a not-so-subtle way of asking what we all want to know.) Clinton laughed, but kept her poker face. “I hope I see a woman president in my lifetime,” she said. “I will certainly vote for her!”

Spire

World Trade Center Hits Record Height
The silver spire topping One World Trade Center on Friday brought the structure to its final height of 1,776 feet. Loud applause and cries of joy erupted from construction workers as the spire was gently lowered and secured into place. (May 10)

This is a great day for the country, it’s a great day for the Port Authority and particularly for all the thousands of workers that workers tirelessly to make this a reality. This has been more than a job for these guys; this has been a mission and they’ve been passionate and truly they’ve been working day and night as tribute to the victims of 9/11, a horrific event that happened here on this very site. I think people now are coming to New York to view and see this building as a symbol of the resiliency of our country, and freedom and liberty. And it’s great to have it back off today.

It is nice to be a part of it. Finally we’ve reached it. It’s symbolic, everybody knows that. I’m excited and proud to be here.

It’s an emotional day. People have been working on this for a decade. And the men and women working on this project, as I said, they’ve given their blood, sweat and tears. When the spire went up, there were tears in the guys’s eyes. You know, it’s not about handshakes. Today it’s about hugs. It’s about remenbering why we’re here. We’re going to rebuild for the good of the county. We’re going to rebuild bigger and bettter to show people that you know our freedom and liberty is something we are going to defend. People can attack it. But it’s is not something, We have resiliency and strength to come back to build the stronger.

Crews Permanently Install Spire On Top Of One World Trade Center
Applause Erupts As Iconic Building Reaches A Symbolic 1,776 Feet

One World Trade Center Reaches New Heights [VIDEO]

When the Twin Towers were destroyed on 9/11, officials promised to rebuild. It took nearly a dozen years. (Cheers) And now, the new World Trade Center has reached its full height. With chants of USA!, construction workers put into place a long spire, making the new tower exactly 1,776 feet tall. It was a moment of celebration:

Construction workers: “This is a great day for the country.” // “We’re making history. It’s a long time coming.” // “It’s great to finish off the building.”

There’s still more construction work to be done, but the new World Trade Center is now the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

House of Cards

'House of Cards' - the Gamble That Paid Off

Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright and Kate Mara discuss the joy of being part of the Netflix original series 'House of Cards,' which has become a surprise hit with internet viewers, at a Los Angeles special screening. (April 26)

Lili Taylor Moves to Netflix's 'Hemlock Grove'
Netflix has added another original series to its site for your binge-watching pleasure. 'Hemlock Grove' is based on a novel of the same name. Actress Lili Taylor talks about the show and being a part of this new way to watch television. (April 28)

the U.S. intelligence community assesses with some degree of varying confidence that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria, specifically the chemical agent sarin.

TBS
