Wawrinka was defeated 6-4, 7-5 by his fellow Swiss Federer, and in his post-match speech revealed the extent of his admiration for his rival.
“I would like to congratulate Roger,” Wawrinka said, with tears in his eyes as he glanced over at Federer. “He’s laughing. He’s an a******, but it’s OK.”
He continued: "I lost some tough ones against you, but when you played the final in Australia I was still your biggest fan so congratulations for your comeback and congratulations for today.
"Anybody who loves to watch tennis loves to watch you so it's always good to see you back at that level, hopefully for many years."

日本でもベストセラーになった辰巳渚さんの「捨てる!」技術がThe Art of Discardingとして英語版が発売されるようです。ここでの「技術」がArtになるのは面白いですね。(the book that originally inspired a young Marie Kondo to start cleaning up her closets)とコンマリブームに乗っかる気満々です(笑)
(アマゾンでの紹介文) The book that inspired Marie Kondo's The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Nagisa Tatsumi's international bestseller offers a practical plan to figure out what to keep and what to discard so you can get - and stay - tidy, once and for all.
Practical and inspiring, The Art of Discarding (the book that originally inspired a young Marie Kondo to start cleaning up her closets) offers hands-on advice and easy-to-follow guidelines to help readers learn how to finally let go of stuff that is holding them back--as well as sage advice on acquiring less in the first place. Author Nagisa Tatsumi urges us to reflect on our attitude to possessing things and to have the courage and conviction to get rid of all the stuff we really don't need, offering advice on how to tackle the things that pile up at home and take back control. By learning the art of discarding you will gain space, free yourself from "accumulation syndrome," and find new joy and purpose in your clutter-free life.
Set limits. The limit may be the capacity of a particular container—a bookcase, say, or a closet. Once your possessions exceed that capacity, get rid of anything that isn’t required. Or simply decide how much of something you are likely to use—for example, wrapping paper—and don’t allow your stock to exceed that. What sort of things?
1: DISCARD WHEN THEY EXCEED A CERTAIN SPACE • Clothes, towels/sheets (cabinet; closet); shoes (shoe rack); food (food shelves); books (bookcase) Don’t keep clothes on bedroom walls, in the corridor or the hall, etc. Decide on just one place to put them. Once that fills up, start checking through what you’ve got. If there’s anything there that you never use, think about getting rid of it. The same approach can be taken with towels and sheets, with shoes that don’t fit on the rack, food that doesn’t fit on the shelves, books that won’t go in the bookcase. Once you’ve decided on the amount of space each type of item should be allocated, think carefully before increasing it. • Pens, pencils (pen holder) It may seem a minor thing, but it’s worth keeping an eye on pen holders. They tend to fill up very quickly, and you want to be able to take pens out and put them back with ease. So once this becomes difficult, get rid of some pens. It’s likely that there are some that don’t work very well, or others you were given but never use. Don’t make the mistake of starting up a new pen box in your drawer.
Are you still with me? It so happens that this week I am reviewing a book called The Art Of Discarding, which its publishers confidently describe as ‘The book that inspired Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic Of Tidying’. It has, they add, already sold two million copies in Japan.
‘Throwing stuff out: it’s a fundamental issue,’ reads the very first sentence. Quite clearly, I am the target audience. The chapter titles give the gist of what is to follow: 1: Don’t keep it ‘for now’. 2: Avoid ‘temporary storage – decide now!’ 3: ‘Sometime’ never comes. 4: ‘Really convenient!’ to somebody else – irritating junk to me. 5: Nothing is sacred. 6: If you’ve got it, use it.
And so forth. On page seven, the author squeezes the message of the entire book into a single sentence. ‘It’s very simple: keep things you use and discard those you don’t.’ The rest of The Art Of Discarding is little more than a repetition of this basic message, over and over and over again. Even though it is an extremely short book – 168 pages with big type and a lot of blank space – it seems much too long. A recurrent phrase is ‘As I’ve said already’. If only the author had followed her own strictures, and discarded anything unnecessary, she could have boiled it down to a couple of paragraphs at most.
Like many self-help manuals with a message too brief to fill up the available pages (diet books, for instance, are all long-winded variations on two words: ‘Eat Less’), The Art Of Discarding includes a survey conducted by the author from her circle of acquaintances. ‘The majority of responses were from the Tokyo area, but some were also from Osaka, Kyushu, Shikoku, Chubu and Hokuriku,’ she adds, helpfully.
捨てる技術というならせいぜい2パラグラフぐらいにまとめられただろうにと皮肉たっぷりに攻撃しています。 If only the author had followed her own strictures, and discarded anything unnecessary, she could have boiled it down to a couple of paragraphs at most.

In 1983, Howard traveled to Italy and became captivated with Italian coffee bars and the romance of the coffee experience. He had a vision to bring the Italian coffeehouse tradition back to the United States. A place for conversation and a sense of community. A third place between work and home. He left Starbucks for a short period of time to start his own Il Giornale coffeehouses and returned in August 1987 to purchase Starbucks with the help of local investors.
From the beginning, Starbucks set out to be a different kind of company. One that not only celebrated coffee and the rich tradition, but that also brought a feeling of connection.

Thank you for your resume and letter of interest in employment with our company. Although your experience and qualifications are impressive, we now have a hiring freeze. We appreciate your interest in our company and would like to keep your resume on file in case we should have any openings in the near future.
Letters of interest and cover letters are frequently used interchangeably even though they have different purposes.
Depending on the instructions you read on a private school's employment page, you may be directed to send a letter of interest or a cover letter. Some people think that a letter of interest is the same as a cover letter. But they really are not the same. What then exactly is the difference between these two letters and how do you compose them?
Summary: 1.A cover letter is a business letter which is sent by a job applicant with the resume and other documents while a letter of interest is a business letter which is also sent with the resume stating the sender’s interest to work for a company. 2.A cover letter is also called an application letter while a letter of interest is also called a letter of inquiry or a prospecting letter. 3.A cover letter contains additional information about the sender and his qualifications for a specific job while a letter of interest does not mention any specific job. 4.A letter of interest is also used by contractors and lenders while a cover letter is only used by job applicants.

With new reports surfacing of President Donald Trump proposing to cut national arts funding such as the National Endowment for the Arts, celebrities from all ends of the spectrum have come forward via social media to react. In addition to Jussie Smollett, Julie Andrews, and Chris Evans recently sounding off on Trump, Twitter saw a flurry of star-studded reactions to the budget cuts Thursday.
Some used the #RighttoBearArts hashtag (which has a co-branded T-shirt), and most tweets appeared incredulous at all the various arts and humanities programs that stand to lose funding if Trump’s budget comes to pass.
“After all the wars are fought what remains are people, art, nature and culture,” Jamie Lee Curtis said. “Trump can try but he cannot cut us out of the picture.”

(オックスフォード) the Second Amendment an amendment (= change) to the American Constitution, part of the Bill of Rights, passed in 1791. The Second Amendment gives people the right to bear arms (= to own and carry weapons). This has become an issue because of a number of recent tragic events when one armed person has shot a number of people. There is now much disagreement over what this Amendment actually means. Some people believe it only applies to the military and others that it applies to all citizens. It states: ‘A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.’
先週のエコノミストはTechnology Quarterlyで量子コンピューターを取り上げていましたが前回1月の音声認識でBear arms or bare arms?とこのような同音異義語をコンピューターがどう認識するか説明していました。
Bear arms or bare arms? Perhaps the most important feature of a speech-recognition system is its set of expectations about what someone is likely to say, or its “language model”. Like other training data, the language models are based on large amounts of real human speech, transcribed into text. When a speech-recognition system “hears” a stream of sound, it makes a number of guesses about what has been said, then calculates the odds that it has found the right one, based on the kinds of words, phrases and clauses it has seen earlier in the training text.
At the level of phonemes, each language has strings that are permitted (in English, a word may begin with str-, for example) or banned (an English word cannot start with tsr-). The same goes for words. Some strings of words are more common than others. For example, “the” is far more likely to be followed by a noun or an adjective than by a verb or an adverb. In making guesses about homophones, the computer will have remembered that in its training data the phrase “the right to bear arms” came up much more often than “the right to bare arms”, and will thus have made the right guess.
Training on a specific speaker greatly cuts down on the software’s guesswork. Just a few minutes of reading training text into software like Dragon Dictate, made by Nuance, produces a big jump in accuracy. For those willing to train the software for longer, the improvement continues to something close to 99% accuracy (meaning that of each hundred words of text, not more than one is wrongly added, omitted or changed). A good microphone and a quiet room help.

Watson shied away from doing additional big-budget studio films and instead focused on smaller movies, like Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), and sought out auteur directors, like Sofia Coppola with The Bling Ring (2013) and Darren Aronofsky with Noah(2014). She turned down big offers: from lucrative cosmetics deals to critically acclaimed scripts. (Emma Stone’s role in La La Land was reportedly developed for Watson.) “There have been hard moments in my career when I’ve had an agent or a movie producer say, ‘You are making a big mistake,’ ” Watson says. “But what’s the point of achieving great success if you feel like you’re losing your freakin’ mind? I’ve had to say, ‘Guys, I need to go back to school,’ or ‘I just need to go home and hang out with my cats.’ People have looked at me and been like, ‘Is she insane?’ But, actually, it’s the opposite of insane.”
"It's one of these frustrating things where names get attached to projects very early on as a way to kind of build anticipation or excitement for something that's coming before anything is really actually agreed or set in stone," she told SiriusXM's Town Hall radio show.
"[Beauty and the Beast] wasn't a movie I could just sort of step into," she continued. "I knew I had horse training, I knew I had dancing, I knew I had three months of singing ahead of me and I knew I had to be in London to really do that. This wasn't a movie I could just kind of parachute into. I knew I had to do the work, and I had to be where I had to be. So, you know, scheduling conflict-wise, it just didn't work out."

“It was fascinating that her activism could be so well mirrored by the film,” Steinem says, noting that Belle uses—you guessed it, again—reading as a way to expand her world. “It’s this love of literature that first bonds the Beauty to the Beast, and also what develops the entire story.” This is a new Belle, much of it by Watson’s design. “I was like, ‘The first shot of the movie cannot be Belle walking out of this quiet little town carrying a basket with a white napkin in it,’ ” she says. “ ‘We need to rev things up!’ ” In the original Disney movie, Belle is an assistant to her inventor father, but here she’s a creator in her own right, developing a “modern washing machine that allows her to sit and read.” Watson worked with costume designer Jacqueline Durran to incorporate pockets in her costume that are “kind of like a tool belt.” Another thing: in the animated version, Belle is on and off horses yet wearing a long dress and silk slippers, which didn’t sit well with Watson. Bloomers were created and Belle’s first pair of riding boots. “The original sketches had her in her ballet shoes,” Watson says, “which are lovely—don’t get me wrong—but she’s not going to be able to do anything terribly useful in ballet shoes in the middle of a French provincial village.”
“Emma has an incredible sense of integrity,” says Livia Firth, the founder of Eco-Age, a sustainable-fashion consulting firm. “You can’t marry activism and then do something in your life that is not in agreement.” Firth praises Watson’s choice of dress for last year’s Met Gala: it was designed by Calvin Klein and made almost entirely from recycled plastic bottles. For her Beauty and the Beast press tour, Watson created a PowerPoint presentation that her stylist sent fashion designers. It included a questionnaire about how their garments are produced, what their impact is on the environment, and the moral reason why she should wear one on the red carpet.

As Steinem honors Watson’s high moral standards and relentless activism, I ask her if there’s a risk of becoming, well, annoying to the general public. Is she too much of an ethical Goody Two-Shoes? After all, what other starlet assigns fashion designers homework before she wears their clothes? Steinem is not amused. “Let me ask you something: If you did a story on a young male actor who was very private and involved in activism, would you think he was too severe or serious? Why do women always have to be listeners? Emma is interested in the world, she is caring, and though she is active she is also joyous and informed.” At this point I’m backpedaling—“I think she’s wonderful!”—but Steinem still digs in. “It’s possible to be both serious and fun, you know. That response is why men will ask a woman, ‘Why don’t you just smile, honey?’ ” The actor Kevin Kline, who plays Belle’s father in Beauty and the Beast, agrees with Steinem. “When someone has a feminist point of view, we tend to think she’s no fun at all,” he says. “But a feminist can be feminine, delicate, vulnerable, sweet—and still demand to be taken seriously. Emma fits the bill perfectly.” A big grin forms on his face as he asks, “Has anyone told you about the dancing scene yet?”

There is still a market for international first class. It’s just not big, and its generally on flights between financial centers. Qatar Airways is making the right decision in focusing on business class, rather than first.
— Brian Sumers
For years, Akbar Al Baker, the brash CEO of Qatar Airways, promised he would introduce a business class seat so revolutionary it would make most first class products obsolete.
Last week, after many delays, Al Baker finally unveiled his patented cabin, and by most accounts, he has succeeded. Soon, on its Boeing 777s and A350s, Qatar Airways will be the first airline to offer couples seated in business class a double bed. Previously, only the most opulent first class seats, such as Singapore Airlines’ Airbus A380 suites class, offered that feature.
Qatar is the latest airline to bet big on business class, calculating the massive seats and over-the-top service of first class no longer makes sense in a competitive market.

The discovery of the near perfectly preserved mummy of a Buddhist monk born almost 200 years ago may have baffled many, but it is also shining a light on how the religion venerates relics of holy figures. The corpse, still sitting in the lotus position, was recovered in the Central Asian country’s capital of Ulan Bator after being stolen from its provincial resting place by a man who aimed to sell it.
The remains are believed to those of a monk named Sanjjab who lived from 1822 to 1905, according to G. Purevbat, a noted Mongolian Buddhist artist and lama (or spiritual teacher) involved in the investigation into the identity of the recovered mummy, as well as its long-term preservation.
(Wikipedia) Buddhist mummies, also called flesh body bodhisattvas, full body sariras, or living buddhas (Sokushinbutsu) refer to the bodies of Buddhist monks and nuns that remain incorrupt, without any traces of deliberate mummification. These are venerated by some Buddhists who believe they successfully were able to mortify their flesh to death.[1] The practise to purposely make undecomposed bodies is seen as controversial and contradictory to the Buddhist belief in impermanence. Many were destroyed or lost in history.[2] In 2015, the Hungarian Natural History Museum found a Buddhist mummy inside a statue of Buddha.[3]
Shinnyokai-shonin In order to become Sokushinbutsu, one has to reduce his fat and liquid in his body to the extreme, basically to be mere flesh and bones, thus the monks has to go through utterly severe practice, Shinnyokai-shonin was no exception, he ate nothing but several nuts a day, entered into ice-cold winter river for many hours, drank laquer sap to prevent spoiling when he becomes mummy, took his eye off when he heard that there was an eye disease spreading in villeage, Meditating in mount Yudono for many days and years, etc. He spent for more than 70 years of his life to become a perfect Sokushinbutsu. In 1783, as he knew that the end of his physical body is approaching, at aged 96, he told his disciples that he will be buried alive deep into the soil, using a bamboo to secure minimum air, in his feeble body condition he could only pray in silent, holds a bell in his hand to communicate outer world that he is still alive, and when that bell of reply stops, that meant he became an enlightened mummified monk. On that very day, his disciples clogged the bamboo hole to prevent form entering air or water, and after 3 years and 3 months, Shinnyokai-shonin was excavated from the earth and had become such a perfet and beautiful Sokushinbutsu (mummified monk).
Buddhists in Mongolia were subject to intense persecution during much of the 20th century when the country was a communist satellite of the Soviet Union. The oppression involved the destruction of numerous stupas, temples and monasteries and the killing of some 24,000 lamas in the 1930s, according to Purevbat. He illustrated the nature of the violence by showing photos of bones and skulls of executed lamas – some with bullet holes – that he has worked to collect. Mongolia, in 1990, threw off Soviet control in the aftermath of the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and swiftly transformed itself into a vibrant democracy. The Ninth Bogd Jebtsundamba, the Tibetan-born spiritual leader of Mongolia’s Buddhists who had been forced to spend most of his life outside the country in India, died in 2012 and has been subject to mummification at Ulan Bator’s Gandan monastery. The original sites of Sanjjab and the Geser Lama’s remains are two small separate stupas on Sodnomdarjaa Mountain in the country’s west central Arkhangai province.
