Miracle of Dunkirk: Indians too were trapped with Allied forces Master-director Christopher Nolan's war epic -- DUNKIRK -- will release in India tomorrow. Before you go relish the movie, see India's connection with this French port city from where 3,00,000 soldiers were evacuated during the World War II. By Dev Goswami | July 20, 2017
In 1940, over the course of eight days, the French port city of Dunkirk won itself a place in military history, becoming the site of an ingenious evacuation that ultimately saved over 3,00,000 allied soldiers. An evacuation that sets the backdrop for Christopher Nolan's war epic Dunkirk, which releases this Friday.
The film promises to be a 70mm spectacle that, early reviews say, is among Nolan's best works. What you will probably not see on the silver screen is the little-known tale of the Indian Army troops who were in and around Dunkirk when the historic evacuation was carried out.
The soldiers were part of the first units of the Indian Army to take part in the Second World War. Over the course of the grand war, the Indian Army, which started off with just under 2,00,000 men, grew to more than 2.5 million personnel, becoming the largest volunteer force in history.
The Indian Army's contributions during the latter part of the World War II are well documented. However, the story of four transport companies of Indian Army that sailed from Mumbai and had to be rescued from the beaches of France has mostly skipped the history books.
こういう知識を得られるのもネットのいいところですが、このインド兵は実は今でいうパキスタン出身が多かったとか。 Operation Dynamo -- code name given to the Dunkirk evacuation -- used 933 ships to pick up the soldiers from the beaches and harbours of the French city. Among the soldiers rescued were a bunch of Indian Army troops who originated from modern-day Pakistan.

Introduction By Gideon Rose Frogs won’t actually let themselves be boiled to death, no matter how gradually you raise the water temperature around them. Humans? We’ll see.
Long ago, experts started worrying about the potential consequences of man-made climate change. As the plant ecologist Charles F. Cooper wrote in Foreign Affairs in 1978, “The addition of carbon dioxide and particulate matter to the atmosphere through burning of fossil fuels and clearing of land has become a significant agent of climatic change that could measurably raise the temperature of the earth by the end of this century.”
英語版ウィキペディアでもaccording to contemporary biologists the premise is false: a frog that is gradually heated will jump out.とあります。
(Wikipedia 英語版) The boiling frog is a parable describing a frog being slowly boiled alive. The premise is that if a frog is put suddenly into boiling water, it will jump out, but if the frog is put in tepid water which is then brought to a boil slowly, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death. The story is often used as a metaphor for the inability or unwillingness of people to react to or be aware of threats that arise gradually.
While some 19th-century experiments suggested that the underlying premise is true if the heating is sufficiently gradual,[1][2] according to contemporary biologists the premise is false: a frog that is gradually heated will jump out.[3][4] Indeed, thermoregulation by changing location is a fundamentally necessary survival strategy for frogs and other ectotherms.

As companies restructure to focus on areas of growth, government is proposing bold strategies to foster everything from clean energy use to greater social inclusiveness. Japan is changing – for the better.
(動画スクリプト) The Global 500 is Fortune’s ranking of the world’s largest companies, ranked by revenue for their most recent fiscal year. It’s the ultimate scorecard for big business around the world.
In sum, the total revenue of the companies on this list was $28 trillion dollars. That’s equal to about 37% of global GDP. And the Companies in the Global 500 earned a total of $1.5 trillion in profit.
The result is a list of companies that are shaping the way people all over the world work, live, play, shop.
The number one company on the Global 500 this year for fourth in a row is Walmart. It’s the only company on the Global 500 with more than $400 billion in revenue and it’s pushing $500 billion. That’s followed by three Chinese companies, State Grid, Sinope Group and China Natural Petroleum.
The United States had 132 companies on this year’s list. That’s down two. It’s kind of held steady around that number for a while. China, on the other hand, gained six companies last year and came in at 109.
One trend that we see in the Global 500 this year is that we saw in the Fortune 500 is continued weakness in the energy sector. Companies like Royal Dutch Shell, and Exxon Mobile, they’r still in the top, but they’re sliding a few spots this year.
There are 33 new companies to the list this year. Most of those are technology companies. You have Facebook making Global 500 for the first time. Tencent out of China, Alibaba out of China. Hewlett-Packard Enterprises, Dell made a comeback this year. And in terms of profit and revenue growth, technology sector leads both of those numbers.
I think one thing you can take away from the Global 500 this year is there’s a lot talk and debate about globalization. But the really big companies, the multinational companies, continue to grow and thrive in the global economy.
予告編の最初に出てくるWe shall go on to the endとか、we shall never surrenderとかいう兵士の言葉を聞いてピンとくる人は歴史に詳しい教養のある方なのでしょう。チャーチルの演説の言葉みたいです。ダンケルク救出作戦後のこの演説は以下のように世界の名演説に選ばれるほどのようです。
When Napoleon lay at Boulogne for a year with his flat-bottomed boats and his Grand Army, he was told by someone. "There are bitter weeds in England." There are certainly a great many more of them since the British Expeditionary Force returned. I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty's Government-every man of them. That is the will of Parliament and the nation. The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength.
We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."
Why does Churchill repeat the phrase “we shall fight” over and over? How does it support the main purpose of this speech?
Actual answers will vary. Example of correct answer: Churchill uses the repetition of the phrase “we shall fight” to add emphasis and to show conviction. At a dark time of World War II, Churchill must state clearly that the British government is determined to win the war, no matter the cost. By making the commitment to fight in every possible place, he is making it clear that Britain will never surrender.
Writing for the Telegraph's Saturday Magazine, he said he wanted to create “virtual reality without the headset”, bringing the reality of Dunkirk home without touching its politics.
“I knew I didn’t want to make a film that could be dismissed as old-fashioned, something that wasn’t relevant to today’s audiences,” he said. “What that ruled out for me immediately was getting bogged down in the politics of the situation. “We don’t have generals in rooms pushing things around on maps. We don’t see Churchill. We barely glimpse the enemy. “It’s a survival story. I wanted to go through the experience with the characters.”
empiricism is a mysticism and a mathematicism of concepts, but precisely one which treats the concept as object of an encounter, as a here-and-now, or rather as an Erewhon from which emerge inexhaustibly ever new, differently distributed 'heres' and 'nows'.
Following Samuel Butler, we discover erewhon, signifying at once the originary 'nowhere' and the displaced, disguised, modified and always re-created 'here-and-now'.
この抜粋で触れられているErewhonという本は辞書にも出ているほどの作品です。
(オックスフォード) Erewhon a novel (1872) by Samuel Butler about an imaginary place called Erewhon. It is an attack on British attitudes of the time towards religion, science, the law, etc., using satire. The word 'Erewhon' is made up of the letters of the word 'nowhere'.
Kenneth Branagh will direct Tom Hiddleston in a forthcoming limited engagement of Hamlet to raise funds for regenerating their former drama school, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Branagh's theatre company have partnered with RADA to launch a co-production of Hamlet, which will run for three weeks from September 1 at the school's 160-seat Jerwood Vanbrugh Theatre. Tickets will be available through a lottery.
All funds raised will support the RADA Attenborough Campaign, named after one of their most famous alumni, which will enable the regeneration of the Academy's Chenies Street premises and help build the school's very first on-site accommodation for students, opening up opportunities for prospective students and further reducing financial barriers for aspiring talent.

An airline in Japan has apologised to a disabled passenger who was forced to crawl up a flight of stairs to board his plane.
Hideto Kijima, who uses a wheelchair, had to hoist himself from the runway at a tiny airport on the resort island of Amami up to the aircraft door, after staff at Vanilla Air refused to allow his friends to carry him aboard.
Vanilla Air apologised to Kijima, who is head of the nonprofit Japan Accessible Tourism Centre, after he took his complaint to the transport ministry.
“We apologised to him for the unpleasant experience,” Vanilla spokesman Akihiro Ishikawa said. “We also explained that we are taking measures to improve our service.”
(オックスフォード) Dunkirk a port in northern France. During World War II about 220 ships of the Royal Navy and 660 small private boats sailed across the Channel between 26 May and 4 June 1940 to bring back to England many British, French and Belgian soldiers who were trapped in Dunkirk by the advancing German army. More than 330 000 soldiers were rescued, and the expression the Dunkirk spirit is now sometimes used in referring to occasions when people show great determination and courage in a difficult situation The Prime Minister praised the Dunkirk spirit shown by the organizers of the event.
