会議の冒頭で「事務連絡があります。携帯電話の電源を切ってください」のようなことを言われるのはおなじみですね。英語で言うとどうなるでしょうか？

housekeeping＝清掃とか家事だけに限らないようですね。しっかり辞書にも載っていますが、慣れていないとこういう場面で使うのは難しそうです。

そういう場に何度も居合わせればなんともない表現なので、知らなければ知らなくてもどうってことないです。色々な場面で色々な表現を学ぶことって結構大事ですね。

洋書ファンクラブの2021年これを読まずして年は越せないで賞でノンフィクション部門に選ばれたEmpire of Painを読み始めました。図書館にあったのでラッキーでした。

春巻まややさんのレビュー

ワシントンポストでは今年の10冊に選ばれていました。アメリカでのオピオイドについてはこのブログでも取り上げましたので個人的にも興味があります。

興味はあるが、厚い本を読み通す自信がない方はまずNew Yorkerの記事を読んでみるといいかもしれません。それでもTimeのカバーストーリーより長いですが。。。

Yutaが実際に遭遇した例とは違いますが、下記の文の最後にあるようにstampを使った表現に出会いました。こちらの例は大谷選手がオールスターに出る直前に書かれた記事です。

ここのstampは「切手」や「ハンコ」といった意味ではないでしょうから、put one's stamp on ...という成句かと思って物書堂のアプリで調べたのですが、どの辞典もヒットせず。ネットで調べたら以下のような説明がありました。動画でも同様の語義を丁寧に説明してくれています。「自分の色を出す」みたいな語義のようです。

辞書にない表現を見つけると少しばかり優越感を覚えます。単なる勘違いだと気づいたのは、語義説明の中にあったため。成句と扱うのか、普通に語義と扱うのかは、突き詰めると微妙なラインになりそうですが、この表現に関しては成句と扱われていませんでした。stamp単独でも「痕跡」という語義で使われることが多いためでしょうか。

stampは「切手」や「ハンコ」という思い込みがあるためか、put one's stamp on ...を正確に把握するのに苦労したのはYutaだけではなかったようです。サイトで調べているときに次のようなブログ記事がありました。

今回注目するのはput one’s stamp onという表現です。stampと聞くと首長の裁決を想起します。以上のことを踏まえるとすでにあらゆる「懸案事項に採決を下している」つまり、「事実上、始動をはじめている」という意味になります。

2011年に就任したサンフランシスコ市長についてのニュースですが、ここでもやはり「自分の色を出す」のように「痕跡」「特徴」の方で解釈した方が良さそうだと記事全体を見ても思いました。

物書堂は優れものでMacだとPCからも引けるので今ではなくてはならないものになっています。今回の反省は成句だと疑わなかったので、初めからput stamp onと成句でしか引かなかったことです。用例にはこの表現が紹介されていたので、用例もしっかり丁寧に確認していればよかったなと思います。

 

最近、感動したこと

最近感銘を受けた出来事は神野大地さんがようやく素晴らしい結果を出されたことです。

ご本人の防府マラソン2位！MGC出場権を獲得しました！でのYoutubeでのコメントは以下です。

やっとサブテン。2時間9分34秒で2位。

4年ぶりに自己ベストも更新。

ここまで本当に苦しかったし、長かった。でも諦めずに頑張ってきて良かった。

どんな時も応援してた方々には感謝です。

ここからまた新しいスタートです。

英語学習でもなんでも継続が大事だと言われますが、実際に行動にうつすのは大変ですよね。Yutaも10月にエントリーしていた横浜マラソンが中止になって、練習が疎かになっているところでした。一度やめると走り始めるのはすぐにおっくうになってしまいました。。。

それに引き換え神野さんの素晴らしいこと。不本意な結果が続く中、Youtubeで心ないコメントがあったりしてもしっかりとトレーニングを続けたからこその結果なんでしょう。あまりにも有名な羽生さんの言葉が浮かびました。

「何かに挑戦したら確実に報われるのであれば、誰でも必ず挑戦するだろう。報われないかもしれないところで、同じ情熱、気力、モチベーションをもって継続しているのは非常に大変なことであり、私は、それこどが才能だと思っている」

英語学習もなかなか目に見える結果はすぐに出ないものですが、諦めずに取り組んでいきたいと思わせていただきました。下記の動画でも140位台に落ちてから1位に返り咲いた元テニス選手のアガシが順位など幻想に過ぎず、毎日しっかりと取り組むことの重要性を語っています（古い動画ですが最近見つけたもので。。。）

昨日からアメリカ政治がバタバタしている感じでした。バイデン政権の目玉法案に対して、日曜の政治番組でマンチン議員の離反があったためです。

米の大型歳出法案、暗雲　200兆円規模　上院で可決困難

　バイデン米政権の目玉政策である10年間で総額1兆7500億ドル（約200兆円）規模の大型歳出法案の先行きに暗雲が垂れこめている。巨額の財政支出で社会保障や気候変動対策を拡充する「大きな政府」路線の象徴だが、民主党の穏健（中道）派議員が19日に反対を表明。与野党が伯仲する上院での法案可決は困難になり、早期の成立を目指してきた政権には大きな痛手となった。

　「圧倒的な規模の債務やインフレのリスクは冒せない」。民主党穏健派のマンチン上院議員は19日に声明を出し、大型歳出法案に反対する意向を明確にした。上院の与野党の議席は50ずつで、共和党は全員が法案に反対。マンチン氏の反対表明によって当面の法案成立は絶望的になった。

FOXでいきなり発言したようで、民主党内は大騒ぎだったようです。法案不支持を表明してからYou're done. This is no.と念を押された後の回答です。

2分あたりから

"This is a no on this legislation. I have tried everything I know to do. And the President has worked diligently. He's been wonderful to work with. He knows I've had concerns and the problems I've had and, you know, the thing that we should all be directing our attention towards the variant, a Covid that we have coming back at us in so many different aspects in different ways, it's affecting our lives again."

ここで注目したいのは、言いにくいことを伝えるのにどのようにしているかという点。当たり前と言えば当たり前ですが、最初にできることはやったことを伝え、バイデン大統領の働きに敬意を示しています。

I have tried everything I know to do. 

And the President has worked diligently. He's been wonderful to work with.

まずは結論からというセオリーの英語でも、このような大事なことはいきなり結論を述べずに背景を述べるようです。議員のwebサイトにも声明が上がってるのですが、I cannot vote to move forward on this mammoth piece of legislation. という肝の部分に入るまでに116文字費やしています。

MANCHIN STATEMENT ON BUILD BACK BETTER ACT

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) released the following statement on the Build Back Better Act.

“For five and a half months, I have worked as diligently as possible meeting with President Biden, Majority Leader Schumer, Speaker Pelosi and my colleagues on every end of the political spectrum to determine the best path forward despite my serious reservations. I have made my concerns clear through public statements, op-eds and private conversations. My concerns have only increased as the pandemic surges on, inflation rises and geopolitical uncertainty increases around the world.

“I have always said, ‘If I can’t go back home and explain it, I can’t vote for it.’ Despite my best efforts, I cannot explain the sweeping Build Back Better Act in West Virginia and I cannot vote to move forward on this mammoth piece of legislation. 

このテレビ放映後にホワイトハウスでは異例の長文の声明を出し立場を翻したとして議員を非難していました。動画は声明を出した報道官の最新のコメント。諦めないようです。

Senator Manchin’s comments this morning on FOX are at odds with his discussions this week with the President, with White House staff, and with his own public utterances. Weeks ago, Senator Manchin committed to the President, at his home in Wilmington, to support the Build Back Better framework that the President then subsequently announced. Senator Manchin pledged repeatedly to negotiate on finalizing that framework “in good faith.”

On Tuesday of this week, Senator Manchin came to the White House and submitted—to the President, in person, directly—a written outline for a Build Back Better bill that was the same size and scope as the President’s framework, and covered many of the same priorities. While that framework was missing key priorities, we believed it could lead to a compromise acceptable to all. Senator Manchin promised to continue conversations in the days ahead, and to work with us to reach that common ground. If his comments on FOX and written statement indicate an end to that effort, they represent a sudden and inexplicable reversal in his position, and a breach of his commitments to the President and the Senator’s colleagues in the House and Senate.

こちらも背景を説明してから一番言いたいことthey represent a sudden and inexplicable reversal in his position, and a breach of his commitments to the Presidentを出しています。長い声明ですが締めのコメントが以下です。

But we will not relent in the fight to help Americans with their child care, health care, prescription drug costs, and elder care—and to combat climate change. The fight for Build Back Better is too important to give up. We will find a way to move forward next year.

is too important to give upというところや、We will find a way to move forwardというところに執念を感じます。

個人的に注目したのはKatie Kitamuraさん。日系の方ということで、2冊目ぐらいまでは買って読んでいました。最近ご無沙汰していたので、改めて読んでみたいと思います。

Intimacies

In Kitamura’s fourth novel, an unnamed court translator in The Hague is tasked with intimately vanishing into the voices and stories of war criminals whom she alone can communicate with; falling meanwhile into a tumultuous entanglement with a man whose marriage may or may not be over for good. Kitamura’s sleek and spare prose elegantly breaks grammatical convention, mirroring the book’s concern with the bleeding lines between intimacies — especially between the sincere and the coercive. Like her previous novel, “A Separation,” “Intimacies” scrutinizes the knowability of those around us, not as an end in itself but as a lens on grand social issues from gentrification to colonialism to feminism. The path a life cuts through the world, this book seems to say, has its greatest significance in the effect it has on others.

 

ゲイツ批判はある意味当たっていた

今年初めにビルゲイツが本を出した時、以前のブログ記事で以下のNationの記事を紹介しました。

In some ways, Gates’s book could be read as a long-winded advertisement for his investments, because he devotes many pages to promoting the need for new technologies to fight climate change. 

ある意味で、ゲイツの本は彼の投資案件の長ったらしい広告として読むことができるかもしれない。彼が多くのページを割いているのは気候変動に取り組む新規テクノロジーの売り込みなのだから。

今年後半に起こったことはまさにその通りで彼の新しい財団Breakthorough Energy と各国政府と企業によるパートナーシップが次々と立ち上がっています。先程の流れでいえばイギリス政府と10月に。

ビル・ゲイツと英国のボリス・ジョンソン首相は10月19日、グリーン技術を市場に投入することを目的とした5億5200万ドル規模のパートナーシップを発表した。

ゲイツは、自身が設立したクリーンエネルギー技術の商用化の加速を目指すプロジェクト「ブレイクスルー・エナジー・カタリスト」を通じて、今後10年間で2億7600万ドル（約316億円）を、グリーン水素や長期エネルギー貯蔵、サステナブルな航空燃料、大気中の二酸化炭素の直接回収技術などに投資する。この投資は、これらの技術を商業化し2050年までに英国の排出量を正味ゼロにすることを目標とする英国政府の誓約に合致するものだ。

6月にはまずEUともパートナーシップを発表していたのですが、COP26の議題もBreakthroughという言葉が使われており、ガッツリ食い込んでいるのがわかります。

36分あたりからEU委員会委員長のアーシュラさんによるスピーチではビルゲイツの名前も出しています。

EUとタッグを組んだビル・ゲイツ。EUの脱炭素にBreakthrough Energyが10億ドルの新規投資

2021年６月２日、EUはビル・ゲイツ氏が設立したBreakthrough Energyとパートナーシップを組み、2022年からの５年間でクリーンテックに最大８億2,000万ユーロ（約10億ドル＝約1,070億円）の新規投資を行うと発表した。

「グリーン水素」「持続可能な航空燃料（SAF）」「直接空気回収（DAC）」「長期エネルギー貯蔵（LDES）」の４つのテクノロジーの早期商用化から始める。いずれも、規模を拡大して化石燃料ベースの既存技術と競争するには費用がかかりすぎる技術ばかりだ。

ゲイツによるこの財団が取り組んでいるのがこの4つのテクノロジーのようでどの政府と企業とやろうが同じことのようです。

ゲイツの本のプロモーション動画をそのまま彼の財団が使っていることから、彼の財団のPR本に過ぎなかったと嫌味を言いたくなる人もいるでしょう。Yutaとして気になるのは、欧米はこの取り組みにゴーサインを出しているようですがこれらの技術の妥当性とか誰か解説しているものはあるのでしょうか。。。

ウォール街のGekkoの動画を見たからが、Youtubeのレコメンドしてきたのはマイケルダグラスのインタビュー。Gekkoのインバクとは強かったようで、あの映画のおかげで投資の世界に入ったという人が多かったとか。ダグラス本人は悪役なので今でも戸惑っているようです。ずるい方法を取ろうとも金と権力と美女を手に入れているのを羨ましく思うのは半ば自然なのでしょうか。

Gekkoの身なりで参考にしたのはバスケットのコーチPat Rileyだそうです。初めて知りましたが、いくつも動画が見つかるので有名な話のようです。

COP26の直前の会議の話ですが、ジョンソン首相は銀行家、投資家向けのサミットを開催していました。グリーン技術への投資を呼びかけるためですが、そこでのキャッチーなコメントは有名なセリフのもじりでした。

英国政府は10月19日、グローバルインベストメントサミットを開催した。同サミットを通じて、英国の「グリーン産業革命のための10項目の計画外部サイトへ、新しいウィンドウで開きます」の推進や、グリーン技術やグリーンファイナンスにおいて英国が国際ハブであることを対外的に強調した。10月7日時点の発表外部サイトへ、新しいウィンドウで開きますでは、イベントに約200の投資家・企業が参加するとされているほか、電気自動車（EV）や再生可能エネルギーなどの分野でロールスロイスなど12社が展示（ショーケース）を行う予定。

英語メディアでこのGreen is goodを見出しに使われていたのは、キャッチーだと判断されたからでしょう。記事内ではネタ元を引き合いに出して説明してくれています。

He channelled the spirit of Michael Douglas’s character from the film Wall Street as he told business chiefs: “To adapt Gordon Gekko – who may or may not be a hero of anybody in this room – green is good, green is right, green works.”

銀行や投資家だったら何度も耳にするフレーズですから、信奉する、しないにかかわらずピンとくるでしょう。このように聴衆に合わせて刺さる言葉を使い分けられたら最高ですね。

有名なフレーズをスピーチ丸ごと紹介してくれているブログがあったので、一部抜粋させていただきます。
