先日イディオム的な表現としてin good handsがTOEICで登場したことを取り上げました。それ以外には、以下のように「手伝う」意味のgive a handでしょうか。

How about giving me a hand with this cabinet?

hands-onという形容詞もhands-on demonstration, hands-on trainingと使われていました。Googleで画像検索をするまでもないかもしれませんが、実際に手で触れてやってみることから「実地の」「直接参加の」という意味になるんですよね。実際に手を触れて作業をしている画像を改めて見て、両手で作業するからこそhands-onと複数形なのだな腑に落ちた次第です（苦笑）

TOEICでの使用例は以下のようなものがありました。Mentorと進める hands-on trainingです（笑）

面白いと思ったのは、hands-offという言葉もあること。こちらは「いろいろ手を出さない」「無干渉の」という意味になるようです。

TOEICでは劇場をリースしてそれ以外は干渉しない、hands-off landlordとして良い意味で使われていました。

The town leased the property back to the Playhouse for the next 25 years as a hands-off landlord.

このような文脈を考えるとhands-on managerは「現場主義のマネージャ」という良い意味にもなるだろう言葉も、時には「何でも手を出す、介入するマネージャ」という嫌な上司の意味になる可能性もありそうです。あくまでも意味を最終的に決めるのは文脈になりますね。時間があれば、そのような例をネット検索してみたいです。
