描写表現でおなじみの動詞examine

The lead package in our July/August issue is all about robots, and automation and artificial intelligence. For the cover, we wanted to do something really fun and playful. So our first thought was to take some great art works from the Western cannon to swap out people for robots. A classic Norman Rockwell’s Thanksgiving meal scene. The Sistine Chapel ceiling with Adam replaced by a robot.

We tried those and they were fun. But what we really fell in love with was the recreation of the famous scene from Act V of Hamlet, in which Hamlet is standing in a graveyard, examining a skull and, or pining our mortality in life.

先ほどのForeign Affairsの表紙について語っていた動画。TOEIC学習者ならおなじみの描写表現での動詞examineの使われ方に反応してしまいました。

さらにもうちょっと先,同じ場なんですけども,5幕1場189-199,道化1が “this (Yorick’s)skull has lain in the earth three and twenty-years.”この頭蓋骨は,これはヨリックのものとあとでわかりますが,二十三年ほど土の中に埋まっていた,といういい方です。
「この頭蓋骨は二十三年間ここに埋まってたやつだ」。ハムレットが,「誰のだ?」というと, 「とんでもない野郎,ヨリックって野郎だ,王様の道化だった男の頭蓋骨だ。」と。ハムレット が,「これが?」道化 1が「そうよ。」でハムレットが,「ちょっと見せてくれ。」といって頭蓋 骨を受け取る。これは有名な場面で,よくハムレットの絵とか写真とかになっている。あるい はストラトフォード・アポン・エイヴォンに行くと,ロイヤル・シェイクスピア・シアターの前にシェイクスピアの像を囲む四つの像がある。そのうちのハムレットは頭蓋骨を持っている。これがヨリックの頭蓋骨ですね。
そこでハムレットはこういいます。「あわれなものだな,ヨリックよく知っていた男だ, ホレーシオ。気のきいた洒落や冗談をのべつ吐き散らしたやつだった,何度となくおぶってもらったものだが,こうなってみると云々」

TOEICのパート１でモノを調べていたり、じっくり見ていたりする場合や、医者が患者を診察しているような場合にはexamineが使われますね。

一方リーディングの方は、提案や計画などを検討するという使われ方多いでしょうか。あとは選択肢としてよく登場しますね。
