リアルTOEIC ダブルパッセージ

ホテルに宿泊した折にドアノブにある例のサイン。今回泊まったホテルではPlease service my room.というメッセージでした。Googleの画像検索だと以下のようなバリエーションがありました。

（部屋の掃除不要）Please do not disturb

（部屋の掃除必要）Please service my room. / Please make up my room. / Please clean my room.

serviceが動詞で使われることはTOEICでもまれで主に自動車や機械の検査・修理の際に使われるようですね。公式関連で使われていた表現が以下です。

The copy machine at the top of the stairs has now been serviced.

今回の使われ方はオックスフォードの語義2に当たりますが、TOEICでは同義語としてあげられていたserveが使われことが多いです。

TOEICの場合ホテル予約ぐらいまでしか出題されることはないので、reserve a roomを押さえておけばいいでしょう。今回のようなservice a roomが出るとしたら以下のような苦情のケースかもしれません。

Cons:
- In ordering coffee/wine - it takes a few attempts to get through to anyone. I called reception in the end...
- Rooms may not get cleaned during the day - I had to turn housekeeping down as I had returned to my room already

In a nutshell, it’s an interesting hotel with Art Deco charm. It has more character than a contemporary 5star. My hiccups with Room Service and Housekeeping may have been just bad timing. The buffet breakfast spread is all worth it if you love a big breakfast!!!
