すっかり忘れていました

軍艦島に行ってきたこともあり、迷わず以下のCNN EEのベストセレクションを買いました。２００円と気軽に買える値段設定です。軍艦島が007の舞台になっていたことは公開当時話題になっていましたね。すっかり忘れていました（汗）

CNNのサイトでここに掲載されているニュースの動画や記事が読めてしまいますが、教材のほうは、和訳や語注、短くきった音声クリップ、ゆっくりめの音声とあるので、しっかりと学習したい場合は教材の購入を強くお勧めします。ただ、教材のほうには動画がないので一度見てからやりこむのがいいかもしれません。２００円で興味のある素材だけを勉強するという方法は、電子書籍ならではの選択肢で、狭く深く身に付けたい素材にはぴったりですね。

CNNのサイトでは、観光案内、短めの記事、長めの記事の３つの記事があがっています。扱っている内容は同じなので読み比べてみるのもいいかもしれません。

さて、まず気になるのは英語で「軍艦島」をどう説明しているかというところ。下記の観光案内の記事ではHashima Island, also known as Gunkanjima (meaning "Battleship Island" for its silhouette that resembles a warship)としています。

Hashima Island, also known as Gunkanjima (meaning "Battleship Island" for its silhouette that resembles a warship) is a 60,000-square-meter cluster of concrete ruins in the sea off Nagasaki, Japan.
It was the bustling home of thousands of coal mine workers in the 1950s and was shut down in 1974. The island has been abandoned since.
Until pop culture and, most recently, a 007 film re-discovered it.

Nicknamed Gunkanjima, or Battleship Island, because of its shape, Hashima island has an eerie, sinister look, perfect for, say, a villain's lair in an action movie.
The inspiration for villain Raoul Silva's deserted hideout in the James Bond movie "Skyfall," the island figures in one of the most dramatic shots of the film.
Its industrial ruins loom slowly into view as Bond and yet another ill-fated Bond girl speed toward the island in a luxury boat.
In real life, a trip to the island is less dramatic.
In 2009, tour operators began offering trips from Nagasaki to Hashima.

Before and during World War II, Hashima, like many industrial sites in Japan, was a location for forced labor.
Korean and Chinese prisoners of war were kept here, enduring varying degrees of hardship.
Conditions in the mines were grueling.
Workers were subjected to heat and humidity with very little to eat and beatings if they slacked.
According to local records, 123 Koreans and 15 Chinese died on the island between 1925 and 1945.
Hashima is one of several industrial sites awaiting inclusion on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. South Korea, however, has formally objected to the island's petition for recognition due to its association with wartime slave laborers.

長い記事では動画も見ることができます。短い記事では事実を端的に述べるだけにとどまってしまいがちですが、長い記事になると個人的エピソードを盛り込んで想像しやすいような書き方になっています。

The period of Kaji's childhood was also the darkest in Hashima's history. Like many of imperial Japan's industrial facilities, Hashima was a destination for hundreds of Korean forced laborers. During World War II, Chinese prisoners of war joined their ranks. For them, Hashima was a desperate place.
In the peace museum at Nagasaki, testimonies from Korean forced laborers line the walls, collated by museum director Yasunori Takazane. "The common stories I heard from Korean and Chinese laborers was that they are enormously hungry. The meals were miserable and when they could not go to work they were tortured, punched and kicked."
Kaji's best friend at school was Korean. He says he didn't see much discrimination against Koreans but he remembers his parents talking about one episode when a Korean worker was beaten. "My father and mother were saying how sorry they were but my Dad said it was inevitable because it is wartime." He remembers resenting the Chinese as a child because they were "locked up in the southern part of the island, right where we used to play baseball. We were so upset they took our place to play, but after the war ended I learned they were forced to work there."
