ホレイシオになること

ハムレットの最後に以下のシーンがあります。この後に有名なセリフの一つであるThe rest is silence.でハムレットは息を引き取ります。日本語は河合先生のハムレットからの抜粋です。＾

ハムレット（前略）なるようになれ。ホレイシオ、俺は死ぬ、
おまえは生きて、俺のしたことを、そしてその大義を
何も知らぬ人に伝えてくれ。

ケネスブレナーのハムレットは忠実に再現していますが、メルギブソンのハムレットは随分と端折っています。忠実にやると映画の上映時間が3時間以上になってしまいますから、ばっさりといかなくてはいけないので仕方がないのかもしれませんね。。。



セントーサ島にあるシロソ砦は博物館のように展示がありますが島全体が観光地となっているため、あまりひどいことは書いていませんでした。

一方、地下鉄の駅からバスを乗り継がないといけないようなところにある以下のような博物館では、日本軍がシンガポール占領下で行ったことをしっかりと伝えていました。両方の博物館はある程度かぶっている説明もあるので、時間がなければどちらかでもいいかもしれません。

もちろん日本人墓地にもいきました。この墓地を訪れたおかげでシンガポールと日本というと第二次世界大戦の日本軍くらいしか思い浮かばなかったYutaが世界大戦前からゴム園を経営する日本人、娼館で働く日本人など、さまざまな日本人がシンガポールで暮らしていたことを知ることができました。

まあ、こんな知識は「英語の資格の取得」や、「本物の英語の習得」とやらには役立ちませんが。。。
