映画キングスマンで悪役を演じたサミュエルLジャクソンのインタビューで出てきた表現です。もちろん、これは有名なことわざのバリエーションですね。基本知識が身についていないとこのような変化球に対応できなくなります。

- No, he does not. He just wants to destroy a certain part of it, so that the world will survive. I mean, every now and then you need a culling, then a war. So you get rid of a specific amount of people. The world regenerates itself. And everything works out fine.
All right. Help me out here, though. You are the villain in this movie.
- I am. I am what’s considered the villain in this movie. Yes.
悪役にリアリティーをもたらすには自分が悪役だと思わずにむしろ自分は良いことをしていると思って取り組んだ方が良さそうですね。「culling=間引き」という表現を使っていますが、論理的に考えるとそのような結論に行き着くので怖いです。論理ではない何かを育むことができるのか？が我々には課された問いではないかと考えています。
