TOEICのMain Streetとの違い

新形式で初登場というわけではありませんが、通りの名前でMain Streetが出ていました。これまでも結構使われています。

Parts of Main Street will be blocked off for the festival and inaccessible to local traffic.



アメリカ大統領選挙だと違った意味をもちます。辞書だとSinclair Lewisの作品の意味を載せていますが、単に「庶民」を指す感じです。Wall Street（金融街）と対比されて使われることが多いのでMain Streetはさしずめ「商店街」となるでしょうか。

オックスフォードは「庶民」に近い意味を載せてくれています。メディアに登場する場合はこちらの意味の方が圧倒的だと思います。

ヒラリーも選挙運動中に以下のように発言していたようです。まさにWall StreetとMain Streetとを対比させていますね。

そうは言ってもWall Streetからの献金はヒラリーに向かっているそうで、サンダースがしぶといのもヒラリーは金融街寄りだと思っている民主党員が多いからかもしれません。

「中産階級」「庶民」「地元商店街」みたいな意味でMain Streetが使われることはTOEICではまったくないと思いますが、メディアに親しんでいないとこういった何気ない単語も理解できないことがあります。とりあえずなんでもいいから読み始めて親しむようにすることをすすめているのもこういったことがあるためです。
