repairは修理だけでない

自然な語の組み合わせの重要性はボディブローのように効いてくるという話です。例えばパート2でAre they still repairing XXXX XXXX?という質問で後半が聞き取れなかったとします。そうするとrepairされるものを想像で補わないといけません。repairするものとして真っ先に浮かぶのはコピー機などの機器でしょうか。でもその発想は「修理」という日本語に引っ張られているかもしれません。

英英辞典を見ると用例に出てくるのは「道路」や「屋根」だったりします。

こちらは名詞の方ですが、同じように道路が例として真っ先にあがっています。

実はAre they still repairing XXXX XXXX?としてあげたのはKinney Roadというような道路名でした。道路名は聞き慣れない地名がつくことがあるので聞き逃しやすいですよね。repairするものにとっさに「道路」というものが浮かばなかったという実体験からこのエントリーを書かせてもらいました。

もちろんTOEICではroad repairは頻出でパート3のサンプル問題などにも登場しています

(Man) Don't you usually drive when you go to those meetings? I thought you didn't like to take the train.
(Woman) I don't, but the highway's being repaired, and I'm afraid I might be late if I have to make a detour through an area I don't know very well.

どうやら「修理」という日本語に引っ張られてrepairするものとして道路が出てこなかったようです。ちなみに日本語だと、道路は「補修」、屋根は「修繕」という表現が使われたりします。

音声が一回しか流れないTOEICでは100%聞き取れない状態が出てくるでしょう。そんな時、今回のような理解のズレが正解を選べない原因となってしまう可能性が高いです。気付いた時に地道に軌道修正していくしかないんでしょうね。
