リニューアルEnglish Journal

最新号が出たのでEnglish Journalの4月号がKindle Unlimitedで読めるようになりました。これまで３つあったインタビューが一つ減り、ドキュメンタリーが加わるようになりました。各素材でディクテーションやシャドーイングのコーナーを設け復習しやすい形式にしたようです。今回の目玉インタビューもYoutubeで見れることを考えると、量は求めずに復習しやすいフォーマットにすることは方向性として間違っていないのではないでしょうか。



以前ガガのパフォーマンスが凄い時に動詞killが使われていましたが、ここでもkillが登場しています。English Journalには載っていない部分ですが。。。

こちらも前に取り上げたvibeという表現。

It’s less of a loner vibe and more of a very-in-touch-with-reality vibe.
孤立してる人、って感じもなくて、むしろ、ちゃんと現実と折り合いをつけてる、って感じなのよね。

結構難しい語も使われています。purgatory（煉獄）は調べないとわかりませんでした（汗）カーラはイタリア系なのでカトリックに馴染んでいるんでしょうかね。まあ、英語学習で辛かった時をユーモラスに伝える時に使えそうです。

And … it was just really cool. Cool experience and it happened really fast, but I feel like the development process, like, is the part that took a while. Like, that in between, almost like music purgatory, kind of, took a while.
あれは本当にクールでした。クールな経験で、あっという間の出来事だったけど、制作過程が、まあ、かなり時間のかかった部分、って感じですね。あの中間部分が、音楽の煉獄みたいで、時間がかかりました。

現在公開中のディズニー映画モアナの曲も彼女が歌っているようです。今回インタビューが収録できたのもこのプロモーションを兼ねてでしょうか。



How Far I’ll Goは「どこまでも」という曲名でLet it goを訳した高橋知伽江さんが同じく訳されていますね。歌詞はこちらをどうぞ。

あまり教材の訳などにケチをつけるのはよくありませんが、image and hypeを「映像や宣伝」としていますが、普通に「イメージと宣伝」でいいかもしれません。

（アレッシア・カーラに）映像や宣伝は控えめにして音楽を前面に押し出すというのは、あなたの判断だったの？

どうしても「100年に一度の歌姫」みたいなイメージを植え付けて売ろうとしますよね。例えばウエブ上で見つけた以下の文章は実力がないのに、イメージとマーケティングで成り立っているような世界を批判しています。

もしかしたらティラー・スウィフトもこのようなことを念頭にして、音楽の質だけで勝負しようとしたカーラを称えているのかもしれません。
