FIRST NIGHT
Sail off on a lavish voyage to Broadway’s golden age

What a treat. The shimmering curtain (imbued with an incredible 250 sq m of gold leaf) opens to reveal a meticulously detailed sailing ship. On board is a certain Anna Leonowens, her hoop skirt swinging with a force to be reckoned with. It’s 1862 and she’s a widow who has come to Siam to teach the King’s children (numbering upwards of 60).

‘The King and I’ review
BY: ANDRZEJ LUKOWSKI
POSTED: WEDNESDAY JULY 4 2018

Like an elderly relative who you make allowances for on grounds of age, classic musical ‘The King and I’ is kind of racist, but difficult to entirely hold to modern standards.

Indeed, back in 1951 Rodgers & Hammerstein’s smash may have seemed mildly progressive in its depiction of interracial almost-romance.

But in 2018 the hyper-orientalist depiction of the kingdom of Siam (aka Thailand) presided over by Ken Watanabe’s eccentric manchild of a king is frequently cringeworthy, not least for the bits in which Kelli O’Hara’s sparky British governess Anna frets at how unprogressive the place is. Lest we forget, at the time (it’s set in 1862) Britain didn’t allow any women to vote, and enjoyed massacres, corsets and tossing its poorer citizens into workhouses.

Watanabe is not a technically adept singer by any stretch of the imagination, but in many respects he runs off with the show; boisterous and amusing as a hearty, eccentric man-child, incapable of escaping his kingship, but able to laugh about it to a point. There is a nice spark between them – perhaps not quite romance, but certainly a real sense that they’re two lonely people who find genuine solace in each other.

The King and I is back in the West End, 67 years on from its Broadway debut. Is the musical showing its age, or has it still something to say to modern audiences?

Shall we dance? That's the question posed by a new production of The King and I, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's classic musical about East meeting West.

The show, about a 19th Century British widow who travels to Siam (now Thailand) to tutor its monarch's many children, boasts familiar tunes, adorable child actors and lavish production values.

Yet its portrait of a white woman being both fascinated and repelled by a society depicted as both backward and barbarous can't help but feel patronisingly out of step with modern sensibilities.

There's a smack of imperial condescension in Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical, but this is a culturally cogent account from Bartlett Sher

It has probably the lushest score of any Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. At least half a dozen of the songs have become enduring classics (“Getting To Know You”, “Hello, Young Lovers”, “Shall We Dance?” et al). Its setting – mid-19th century Siam – offers exorbitant opportunities for lavish spectacle.

And yet it’s easy to appreciate why this 67-year-old show is still banned in Bangkok and why not a breath of those songs has ever been heard on Thai radio.

There’s a smack of imperial condescension to this story of a widowed, well-bred Victorian governess who goes out to teach the children of to King Mongkut of Siam and gives a funny foreign despot and his feudal court a stiff dose of western values.

Shall we dance?

Sher’s production gives deep pleasure and will make you think twice about patronising this show in future. Shall we dance? Stupid not to.
