頼れる父親？

朝日新聞によるブッシュ元大統領の訃報に対して「頼りない息子」とツイートしていた人がいて笑ってしまいました。

長男のブッシュ元大統領が声明　「頼れる父親だった」

　ジェブ、ニール、マービン、ドロ、そして私は、深い悲しみを抱きつつ、我々の親愛なる父が、９４年の素晴らしい生涯を終え、死去したと発表いたします。ジョージ・Ｈ・Ｗ・ブッシュは非常に優れた人格の持ち主で、息子、娘にとっては最高に頼れる父親でした。

公式の声明は英語表現の参考になるのでなるべく見るようにしています。

DALLAS, TEXAS – "Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died. George H. W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for. The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41’s life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens."

朝日新聞の「息子、娘にとっては最高に頼れる父親でした」はthe best dad a son or daughter could ask forを訳したものでしょう。共同の外電をオリジナルの英文を確認もせずに書いたのではと思ったのですが、共同通信は「望みうる最良の父だった」と英文に忠実に訳していました。疑ってしまってごめんなさい。

長男のブッシュ氏は声明で「高潔な人格の持ち主であり、望みうる最良の父だった」と悼んだ。

英語の場合は最上級で言い切ることが多いので、このケースも子供達が求めうる中で最高の父親だったと言っているのでしょう。ask forという表現を確認しておきますが、I couldn't ask for more.のような表現に慣れておきたいですね。

この表現は何も訃報だけではなく、父親に感謝する機会があれば使えるでしょう。父の日のメッセージにもありました。

TOEICでは設問文でもWhat does the woman ask for? / What information does the woman ask for?のように頻出しています。

ask forは本文でも使われていますね。求められるものはhelp, permission, suggestion, recommendation, feedbackが多いですが、今回の声明のようにthat節内で使われているものもありました。
