賢治とキップリング

青谷さんの本でドナルドキーンさんも英訳しているのを知りました。どんなものか知りたくて調べてみると次のようになっていました。カーペンターさんの訳はキーンさん寄りですね。

Undaunted by the rain,

Undaunted by the wind,

Undaunted by the snow or the summer heat,

With a strong body

And no desires,

Never losing my temper,

I will always keep smiling....

キーンさんが訳したのはDawn to the Westという日本文学史の教科書といえる本で、宮沢賢治を取り上げる中で上記のところだけを訳していました。キーンさんは宮沢賢治の詩では永訣の朝や無声慟哭の方を評価しておりそちらは全訳していました。パルバースさんと比べてずっと冷静に評価しています。元祖相田みつをみたいに捉えている感じです（笑）

This poem is much less Kiplingesque in the original than it may seem in translation. All the same, it is by no means one of Miyazawa's best poems, and it is ironic that this should be the one poem for which he is universally known, a poem inscribed for inspirational purposes on plaques and souvenir towels, and meorized by would-be emulators of his steadfast purpose. The poem is affecting, it is true, but less because of its contents than because of the background. One cannot help but be struck by the picture of Miyazawa writing this poem of resolution and self-encouragement even as he lay at the point of death.

これは賢治の最良の詩とはとても言えず、この詩が額に飾られたり手拭いに印刷されたり、その不動の信念にあやかろうとする者によって暗記されたりして賢治の代表作のように見なされているのは皮肉である。確かにこの作品は胸をうつが、それは内容よりも、この詩を作った時の状況が感動的なのである。死を目前にした賢治がこうして強い意志を表わし、自分を励ましている姿には感銘を受けずにはいられない。

This poem is much less Kiplingesque in the original than it may seem in translation.（この詩は翻訳で感じられるようなキップリングのような感じは原文ではほとんど感じない）という部分が翻訳では訳されていません。Kafkaesqueだったらカフカの小説のような不条理な感じだというのは想像できますが、Kiplingquesqueとはどういった感じなのでしょうか。

Rudyard Kipling 

(1865-1936) an English writer. He was born in India, where many of his books are set (e.g. The Jungle Book and Kim), and worked there as a journalist in the 1880s. He wrote in a wide range of forms, including novels, short stories and poems for adults and children. Many of his poems are still very popular, including If, Gunga Din and Mandalay (1892). The characters in his work are often soldiers in parts of the British Empire, and he has been accused of taking too much pride in the British Empire and its use of military force. In 1907 Kipling became the first English writer to receive the Nobel Prize for literature.

キーンさんはキップリング のIfという詩を念頭に置いている感じがします。翻訳はこちらのブログから抜粋させていただきました。

もし君が、自分の美徳を崩すことなく（自分を見失わずに）、人々と話をすることができるなら、 

また、庶民の感覚を失うことなく、王様とともに道を歩むことができるなら、 

もし君の敵と愛する友人のどちらもが、君のことを傷つけることがないのであれば、 

もし君が、全て人が大切であり、大切にしすぎなければ、

以前このブログでも取り上げましたが、賢治の場合は病に伏せていましたので、そんな人間には現実には到底なれないというのを身にしみて分かっていて書いていますので、確かにキップリングの詩で描かれているあるべきジェントルマンとは別物ですね。テニス好きのYutaとしてはウィンブルドンにこの詩の一節が書かれているというのに反応してしまいました。キップリングの詩はフェデラーやナダルなら確かに似合います。

ビクトリア時代における禁欲主義への回帰、すなわち、窮状でも毅然とした態度を保つ英国人の気概として、"If—" は正当な文化資本の名残をとどめている[7] 。この詩の英国における文化建設的地位は、数々の詩のパロディーや英国人による認知度により裏付けられる[8][9]。

インドでは、プネ市にある国防士官学校（英語版）で、詩のコピーは士官室の勉強机の前に掲げられた。英国では、第2詩節3-4行目である “If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster / and treat those two impostors just the same” の句が、ウィンブルドン選手権の開かれるオールイングランド・ローンテニス・アンド・クローケー・クラブセンターコートの選手入場口に描かれている[1]。

In Britain, the third and fourth lines of the second stanza of the poem: "If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster / and treat those two impostors just the same" are written on the wall of the players' entrance to the Centre Court at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, where the Wimbledon Championships are held.

Many of his poems are still very popular, including If, Gunga Din and Mandalay (1892). とオックスフォードが説明してくれているようにifという詩はいろいろな有名芸能人が読んでいる動画をYoutubeで見つけることができます。それだけ広く知られているんでしょう。宮沢賢治をあまり知らない英国人やアメリカ人がUndaunted by the rain, Undaunted by the wind,という詩を読んだら、キップリング のifという詩を連想するかもしれない。そんな配慮からThis poem is much less Kiplingesque in the original than it may seem in translation.（この詩は翻訳で感じられるようなキップリングのような感じは原文ではほとんど感じない）のでしょうね。同じような内容でも人によって連想するものが変わる、こういうのも翻訳では念頭に置かなくてはいけないことかもしれません。
