志村けんの訃報はやはりショックでした。Democracy Nowという番組でも触れています。左寄りの番組なのでロックダウンを導入せず、検査も消極的な日本政府の犠牲者のような扱いです。あのコントのノリは英語ではslapstickというようです。

In Japan, the popular comedian Ken Shimura has died after contracting COVID-19 at the age of 70. Known for his slapstick style, he was a regular fixture on Japanese variety shows. His death comes as the Japanese government has resisted imposing a lockdown or social distancing measures, citing concerns for the economy. Japan recorded over 170 new cases on Sunday, 68 of those in Tokyo. Testing has remained extremely limited.

ここで確認したい英語表現はfixtureです。TOEICでのfixtureは別のブログで以前扱いました。今回の使い方も同じような使われ方です。

Ken Shimura, a comedian who was a fixture on Japanese television for decades, died on Sunday evening from the coronavirus, the Japanese media reported Monday. He was 70, and immediately before his illness had been set for his first starring role in a feature film.

Shimura entered a Tokyo hospital on March 20 with fever and pneumonia and tested positive for Covid-19 on March 23. He is the first prominent Japanese entertainment world figure to die of the virus.

ニューヨークポストではhousehold nameと表現していました。こちらも浸透度の高さを示したものとなっています。

fixtureもhousehold nameもどの世代にも愛されたことを表現していますが、これを説明的にすればShimura, who attracted fans of all generations with his slapstick comedy and funny facesというABCニュースの表現になるでしょう。Jerry Lewisというアメリカのコメディアンに例えています。

TOKYO -- Popular Japanese comedian Ken Shimura, who drew inspiration from the American comedic icon Jerry Lewis, has died from the coronavirus, becoming Japan's first known celebrity victim of the disease. He was 70.

Shimura, who attracted fans of all generations with his slapstick comedy and funny faces, had been treated at a Tokyo hospital and died on Sunday, according to his agency, Izawa Office.

Jerry Lewisって誰?って感じですが、ロングマンの辞書に載っていますし、こちらもすごい人物のようです。
