ニュースを課金する法律を用意しているオーストラリア政府に反対しFacebookがオーストラリアのニュースの配信を止めた件を色々調べている時に見つけた動画です。第二次世界大戦時に日本がオーストラリアを空襲したのは知識としては知っていましたが、最初の空爆を行ったのは2月19日のことなんですね。被害を与えた方は「そんな昔のことをまだ〜〜」なんて態度をとりがちです。広島については今後も記念式典が開かれることに疑問を持ちませんが、オーストラリアのダーウィンで慰霊式が実施されたことをどこまで自覚しているでしょうか。日本のメディアはしっかり取り上げていたので「メディアが〜〜〜」という言い訳もできません。

豪で旧日本軍空襲７９年慰霊式典が開催 ９９歳元軍人も参列

　第二次世界大戦中、旧日本軍がオーストラリア北部ダーウィンに大規模な空襲を行ってから７９年となる１９日、現地で慰霊式典が営まれ、９９歳の元軍人も参列しました。

　１９４２年２月１９日、 当時連合軍の拠点だったダーウィンに２４０機を超える旧日本軍の戦闘機が大規模な空襲を行い、石油施設や市庁舎などが爆撃され２４０人を超す人たちが死亡しました。

 

　この日、慰霊式典では空襲が始まった午前９時５８分に合わせて、当時を再現したデモンストレーションが行われ、７９年前の空襲を経験した９９歳の元軍人も参列しました。

オーストラリアABCやTBSのニュースに登場されていた当時を経験した元軍人のMervyn Eyさんが記事になっていました。滑舌が悪くて聞き取れませんでしたが、この記事の最後のようなことをおっしゃっているのでしょう。

Mervyn Ey was a 20-year-old Australian Army private stationed in Darwin when bombs rained down on him and his mates 79 years ago.

Now 99, he's made the trek from Adelaide to the Northern Territory for Friday's annual commemoration of the Japanese attack that killed 240 people.

He asked the crowd - which included Federal Minister for Veterans' Affairs Darren Chester, the Ambassador of Japan and members of the Australian Defence Force and the US Marine Corps - if Darwin was any better defended in 2021.

"The answer is yes. Old enemies are now the closest of friends," he said.

"But the experience in Darwin has taught us that we can never rely on hope as deterrence," he added.

Mr Ey said he was surprised at all attention he'd received from the people of Darwin and the media.

"I had mates during the war that should have more recognition than me," he said.

ダーウィン空襲

1942年2月19日、オーストラリア史上で最大規模の他国勢力による攻撃が行われた。後にダーウィン空襲 (英語: The Bombing of Darwin)、別名ダーウィンの戦い (英語: The Battle of Darwin)として知られる[4]。同日、計242機の日本軍機が2回に分けてダーウィン湾の市街地、艦船そして市街地付近に建設された2つの飛行場を攻撃した。攻撃は第二次世界大戦中に日本軍のティモール、ジャワ島侵攻を阻止しようとする連合国軍がダーウィンの飛行場を基地とするのを妨害する目的で行われた。

ダーウィンは攻撃の規模に比べると防備が軽く、日本軍はほとんど損害を被らずに連合国に重大な被害を与えた。ダーウィンの都市部も空襲により被害を受け、非戦闘員の死者も多数出た。攻撃の直後に、ダーウィンの非軍属市民の半分以上が完全に街を離れた[5]。この時に日本軍が行った2回の空襲は、1942年から43年にかけて100回以上日本がオーストラリア軍に対して行った空襲のうち、一番早く、かつ大規模に行われたものであった。

この説明を受けてオーストラリアにとっての「真珠湾攻撃」なんだろうと思ったら、やはりそういう観点から記事にしたものがありました。

If 7 December 1941 is "a date that will live in infamy" for the United States, then 19 February 1942 is surely one that will join it in the annals of shame for Australia.

That was the day, just 10 weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when the same carrier-based Japanese force turned its attention to the small northern town of Darwin, with equally calamitous results.

But the world remembers one and barely recalls the other.

カウラ事件（カウラじけん）は、第二次世界大戦時の1944年8月5日に、オーストラリア連邦ニューサウスウェールズ州カウラで起こった日本兵捕虜脱走事件。

捕虜収容所の脱走事件としては、史上最多の人数（日本人収容者数1,104名の内、545名以上）と見られる。死者数235名（オーストラリア人4名、日本人231名）、日本人負傷者数108名。

Continuing to grow the fruit of friendship: new Japanese Ambassador visits Cowra

The new Ambassador of Japan to Australia has recognised the significance of Cowra to the relationship of the two nations, visiting before he was officially appointed to the role on Monday.

His excellency Shingo Yamagami and his wife Kaoru Yamagami joined Cowra Mayor, Councillor Bill West, Cr Judi Smith and other dignitaries in visiting the Japanese War Cemetery, POW Camp and Japanese Garden.

Mr Yamagami said the visit was an opportunity to reinforce the great relationship between the two nations.

"I'm deeply touched by the sacrifices made by all those who lost their precious lives at the time of the Breakout," he said.
