There were plenty of people in the room willing to drink the kool-aid all hoping to crack the unicorn club, the billion dollar startups emerging in Silicon Valley at the time.

この部屋の多くの人々がすすんでクールエイドを飲んでユニコーンクラブへの仲間入りを望んでいました。当時シリコンバレーに登場していた何十億ドルものスタートアップ企業になることを。

あまりマニアックなイディオムは資格試験向けに学ぶ必要はないですが、ネイティブ向けの素材では普通に使われています。こういうのは誰にも勧められるものではなくなるので、なかなか学習的には取り組みづらくなります。

先ほどの60ミニッツで登場していたので今回取り上げてみました。

クールエイドを飲む（Drinking the Kool-Aid）は、アメリカ英語のスラング、慣用句。

仲間内の同調圧力に屈して誤った、あるいは無謀な選択をしてしまうことを意味し、「盲信する」、「無批判に従う」、「固定観念に囚われる」などといった意味で使用される。近年では「原因や目的への極端な献身」の意味も持つようになった。

Yutaがこの表現を見かけたのは次の映画。

10年以上も前のものでした。悪いと思っているのに参加してしまうというニュアンスがあるのでしょうか。

16分20秒あたりにはThe emperor has no clothesという表現が登場していました。はだかの王様the Emperor’s new Clothesのことですね。

Kool-Aidのイディオムの意味は載せていませんでしが、有名な童話でもあるのでThe Emperor’s new Clothesはオックスフォードが見出語にしています。こちらも時代や権威に流されやすい我々を示す表現でもあります。
