心に届く英語のやまと言葉

話題になったイギリス議会での演説ですが、ウクライナの大統領のスピーチはOfficial Websiteで英語版を確認できるのですね。情報戦をうまく戦っていることを実感します。

Ukraine that saves people despite the terror of the invaders. Defends freedom despite the blows of one of the world's largest armies. Defends despite the open sky. Still open to Russian missiles, aircraft, helicopters. "To be or not to be?" - You know this Shakespearean question well.

13 days ago, this question could still be raised about Ukraine. But not now. Obviously, to be. Obviously, to be free. And if not here, where should I remind you of the words that Great Britain has already heard. And which are relevant again.

We shall not give up and shall not lose!

We shall go the whole way.

We shall fight in the seas, we shall fight in the air, we shall defend our land, whatever the cost may be.

We shall fight in the woods, in the fields, on the beaches, in the cities and villages, in the streets, we shall fight in the hills ... And I want to add: we shall fight on the spoil tips, on the banks of the Kalmius and the Dnieper! And we shall not surrender!

チャーチルの1940年のスピーチを想起させる内容ということなので該当部分を見比べてみます。細かい表現に違いはありますが、we shall ,,,と色々と挙げて最後にwe shall never surrenderと締めるという大枠はそのままですね。

'We shall fight on the beaches'

This is perhaps Churchill's most famous speech, used in television and film programmes reflecting on the PM's life for decades to come.

It was not an address given live to the nation, but to the Commons, with only MPs and staff able to hear its debut.

However, there is no doubt it will be remembered as one of the most powerful political oratories of all time.

英語はドイツ語系を基に、フランス語・ラテン語系が組み合わさった言語と言われます。日本語で言えば大和言葉と漢語でしょうか。その点を絡めてチャーチルの演説を語っているものがありました。

本来語とフランス・ラテン借用語の使い分け 　

以上のことを念頭に、次の文を比べてみよう。 

The fight was brought to an end. 

The conflict was terminated. 　

2つの文は「争いが終わった」を意味し、ほぼ同義であるといえる。だが、何らかのニュアンスの違いは感じられないだろうか。多くの読者は、たとえ英語のネイティヴ・スピーカーでなくても、「具体的で、直接感情に訴えかける」最初の文に対して、2番目の文については「抽象的で、堅苦しく、よそよそしい」といった印象を受けるだろう。 　

日本語のやまと言葉の方が心に届きやすいように、チャーチルのWe shall fightの部分はほぼ本来語でなされており、だからこそ心に届くと説明してくれています。

英語は、このように本来語と借用語を使い分けることによって文体における微妙な差異を出すことが可能である。そうした効果的な使い分けを示す例をもう一つ挙げてみよう。

We shall fight on the beaches,

we shall fight on the landing grounds,

we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,

we shall fight in the hills;

we shall never surrender.

われわれは海辺で戦う。

われわれは上陸地で戦う。

われわれは野で、街頭で戦う。

われわれは丘で戦う。

われわれは決して降参しない。

これは英国首相であったウィンストン·チャーチル(Winston Churchill, 1874 - 1965)が第2次世界大戦中の 1940年6月4日に、下院で行った演説の一部である。英国軍がナチス·ドイツに敗れ、フランス北部のダンケルクから徹退したという危機的状況のなか、徹底抗戦しようという強い意志が込められたスピーチで、非常に訴える力をもっている。

演説に用いられている語を調ベてみると surrender(フランス語からの借用)を除くとすべて本来語である(なお、street はもともとラテン語起源であるが、アングル人などがヨーロッパ大陸にいた時代にすでに借用されたものなので、事実上本来語といえる)。

もし、チャーチルが、フランス語やラテン語由来の外来語（イタリック体にしてある）を用いて、 　

We shall resist on the coasts, 　

we shall resist on the disembarking areas, 　

we shall resist in the cultivated expanses and in the avenues, 　

we shall resist in the mountains; 　

we shall never surrender. 

と述べていたら、英国民にどれだけ彼の強い意志が伝わったであろうか。

ただ、外国語学習者にとっては本来語の方が多様な意味を持ちやすく、その情感含めて理解するのが難しいのですけれども。。。このあたりの語感を磨くことは資格試験の守備範囲を超えるものになってしまいます。
