戦争の記憶ほど、国家ごとに違うものはないでしょう。8月15日を日本人は特別な気持ちを持って迎えるものの5月には終戦のイメージと結びつきません。注目を集めているロシアでの大祖国戦争戦勝記念日は5月9日ですが、西ヨーロッパでは5月8日なんですね。

Victory in Europe Day, 8 May 1945. The day marked the end of fighting in Europe during the Second World War, and there were public celebrations in London and many other places.

Today, on 8 May, we, the Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7), alongside Ukraine and the wider global community, commemorate the end of the Second World War in Europe and the liberation from fascism and the National Socialist reign of terror, which caused immeasurable destruction, unspeakable horrors and human suffering. We mourn the millions of victims and offer our respect, especially to all those who paid the ultimate price to defeat the National Socialist regime, including the western Allies and the Soviet Union.

本日、5月8日、我々G7首脳は、ウクライナ及びより広い国際社会と共に、欧州における第 二次世界大戦の終結と、計り知れない破壊や言い表せないほどの恐怖と人的被害をもた らしたファシズム及び国家社会主義の恐怖政治からの解放を記念する。我々は、何百万人 もの犠牲者を悼み、西側連合国及びソビエト連邦を含む、国家社会主義体制を打ち負かす ために究極の代償を払った全ての人々に対し、特に敬意を表する。

Seventy-seven years later, President Putin and his regime now chose to invade Ukraine in an unprovoked war of aggression against a sovereign country. His actions bring shame on Russia and the historic sacrifices of its people. Through its invasion of and actions in Ukraine since 2014, Russia has violated the international rules-based order, particularly the United Nations Charter, conceived after the Second World War to spare successive generations from the scourge of war.

77年後、プーチン大統領とその体制は、主権国家に対するいわれのない侵略戦争として、 ウクライナに侵攻することを今選択した。彼の行動は、ロシア及びその国民の歴史的犠牲 を辱めている。2014年以降のウクライナへの侵攻とそこでの行動を通じ、ロシアは、第二 次世界大戦後に将来の世代が戦争の惨禍を免れるよう考え出された、国際的なルールに 基づく秩序、特に国連憲章を侵害してきている。

Today, we were honoured to be joined by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. We assured him of our full solidarity and support for Ukraine’s courageous defence of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and its fight for a peaceful, prosperous and democratic future within its internationally recognised borders, with the liberties and freedoms that so many of us enjoy today.

本日、我々は、ヴォロディミル・ゼレンスキー・ウクライナ大統領の参加を得たことを光栄に 思う。我々は同大統領に対し、ウクライナによる主権と領土一体性の勇気ある防衛と、我々 の多くが今日享受している自由を伴う、国際的に認められた国境内での平和的で繁栄した 民主的な未来のための戦いに対する、我々の全面的な連帯と支援を保証した。

じゃあアメリカはどうかと言えば、5月末のMemorial Dayがそれに当たるでしょうか。

Memorial Day began in the South during the civil war when flowers were placed on graves, and the North first celebrated it in 1868. It was previously known as Decoration Day. Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer vacation from school. Southern states also celebrate Confederate Memorial Day on different dates during the year, mostly in April or May.

さらに言えば西ヨーロッパは11月11日の第一次世界大戦の休戦記念日も重要です。それだけ犠牲が大きかったからでしょう。本当にこのような日の捉え方は国によって違うので、外国語学習者にとってはなかなか感じ取るのが難しいものです。
