Jumping off a cliff in finding your wings on the way downについて、joyjoyさんから有名な引用句だと教えていただきました。どうやらRay Bradburyの言葉のようです。TimeのObituaryでもこの言葉を使って書かれていました。彼自身の言葉はYou’ve got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.のようです。

His advice to writers—and it’s among the best ever given—is as follows: “You’ve got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.”
A cliff-jumper all his life, Bradbury never hit the ground. He died peacefully on Tuesday in Los Angeles.
崖から飛んで地面にたたきつけられてしまうような場合は、hit the groundと表現するんですね。この言葉の意味を説明する必要はありませんが、NPRの記事でHe was telling us that every impossible dream that comes true begins with a leap of faith.とパラフレーズしてくれています。

「〜したら〜しよう」という人に対して背中を押す一言となりそうです。英語学習なんかも、書けるようになるには書き始めないといけない訳ですし、読めるようになるには読み始めないといけない訳ですからね。個人的な経験からいえばhit the groundを何度もするはめにはなりますが。。。（汗）
