Let’s go places

米国のTOYOTAはLet’s go placesというフレーズを用いているようです。今週のビジネスウィークにあった広告では、以下のように使われています。

She’s going places.
And we’d like to help her get there, safely.

「子供が人間的に成長する」ことと文字通り車で「いろいろな場所に行く」ことをかけているのでしょうか。be going placesには「成功をおさめる」という意味があるようですね。

Youtubeでは動画CMが見つかりましたが、Let's go places, not just the ones you can find on the map but the ones you can find in your heart.（いろいろな場所に行きましょう。地図にある場所だけでなく、心の中にある場所にも）で始まるナレーションはなかなかかっこいいです。30秒版と60秒版でナレーションはほとんど同じないようですが、違いを比べてみるのも表現の勉強になるかもしれません。

雑誌広告に戻りますが、まあ、子供の健やかな成長を願っているフレーズを並べています。letter in volleyballがピンとこなかったので辞書を調べました。

She will

スポーツで表彰されるといった感じの意味のようで、米国で学校生活を送った人にはピンとくる表現なんでしょうね。自分にはなじみのないコンセプトだったので英英辞典の定義を読んでもすぐには分からなかったので、英和辞典でまず確認しました。

今回のgo placesにしろ、動詞letterにしろ生活に密着したような言葉は外国に住んでいると見えづらいですね。
