今週のEconomistの表紙はThe Man who used to walk on waterとあります。前のブログを読んでくださった方はこのテーマを過去に取り上げたことを思い出していただけるかもしれません。2010年のニューヨーカーの表紙が以下です。オバマの神がかったオーラが完全に消え失せてしまったことを伝えるもので、詳細は本記事最後のほうをご覧ください。



これは、オバマケアの立ち上げ失敗などでオバマ大統領の支持率が過去最低を記録していることからきているものでしょう。日本では今でもオバマ大統領のイメージは悪くないですが、米国内ではすでに輝きを失ってしまっているのかもしれません。

サタデーナイトライブが支持率の落ち込みと気分の落ち込みのdepressionにかけた面白いパロディーをご覧になればオバマ大統領が抱えているスキャンダルの多さが分かります。

The Man who used to walk on waterのwalk on waterですが、これを載せていない辞書もあるなか、やはり『アメリカ英語背景辞典』は頼りになります。

walk on water 「水の上を歩く」
新約聖書『マタイ伝』第14章、キリストは船に乗った弟子たちを追ってガラリヤ湖を歩いて渡る。いわゆる「水上歩行の奇跡」である。walk on waterは「不可能と思われることを行なう」の意味で比喩的に用いられる。

◆湖の上を歩く
それからすぐ、イエスは弟子たちを強いて舟に乗せ、向こう岸へ先に行かせ、その間に群衆を解散させられた。
群衆を解散させてから、祈るためにひとり山にお登りになった。夕方になっても、ただひとりそこにおられた。
ところが、舟は既に陸から何スタディオンか離れており、逆風のために波に悩まされていた。
夜が明けるころ、イエスは湖の上を歩いて弟子たちのところに行かれた。
弟子たちは、イエスが湖上を歩いておられるのを見て、「幽霊だ」と言っておびえ、恐怖のあまり叫び声をあげた。
イエスはすぐ彼らに話しかけられた。「安心しなさい。わたしだ。恐れることはない。」
すると、ペトロが答えた。「主よ、あなたでしたら、わたしに命令して、水の上を歩いてそちらに行かせてください。」
イエスが「来なさい」と言われたので、ペトロは舟から降りて水の上を歩き、イエスの方へ進んだ。
しかし、強い風に気がついて怖くなり、沈みかけたので、「主よ、助けてください」と叫んだ。
イエスはすぐに手を伸ばして捕まえ、「信仰の薄い者よ、なぜ疑ったのか」と言われた。
そして、二人が舟に乗り込むと、風は静まった。
舟の中にいた人たちは、「本当に、あなたは神の子です」と言ってイエスを拝んだ。

22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
