自分は、子供の頃、百科事典を買ってもらった世代に属します。（それほどというか、まったく読みませんでしたが。。。（汗））また、インターネット出現前は、語学学習者にとって大きな辞書を揃えることはステータスでした。研究社の英和大辞典なんて高嶺の花で、今でも本屋とかで見かけるとため息が出ます。
1990年代までは百科事典のセールスマンもいたそうですから、立派な本棚は一つのステータスだったのでしょう。そんな時代があったことを実感できる広告が50年前のTimeにありました。ケネディ大統領の暗殺50年による復刊号（1963年11月29日号）に以下のようなWebsterの英語辞書の広告がありました。昔の雑誌は本当に広告が多いです。
