「秘密基地ごっこ」って英語では？

ポール・ラッドを見ると、未だにドラマ『フレンズ』でのフィービーの恋人マイクに思えてならないのですが、ティナフェイとの映画『Admission』などいろいろと活躍しているようですね。

そんなポール・ラッドの映画『This is 40』が全米で公開されているようです。年齢も近い話ですし、子育ての悩みとか、40代に差し掛かる直前のとまどいなんかが描かれている感じなので共感をもって見れそうな映画です。

この映画もスクリプトが簡単に手に入るので、先の場面のやり取りを確認することができました。build a fort / build a tree house / have a lemonade stand / kick the can / look fore dead bodies(!!)など、子供のときによくやったことに触れています。

PETE: You’re on your computer too much as it is. You need to get outside more.
DEBBIE: Yeah. You can build things. You can build a fort.
SADIE: What?
DEBBIE: Yeah, build a fort. Play with your friends.
SADIE: Make a fort?! Outside? And do what in the fort?
DEBBIE: When I was a kid we used to build tree houses and play with sticks.
SADIE: Nobody plays with sticks.
PETE: You and Charlotte can have a lemonade stand.
DEBBIE: Play Kick the Can.
PETE: Look for dead bodies.
DEBBIE: It’s fun.

子供たちが働いてお金を得ることを学ぶため自宅の前でレモネードスタンドを開きレモネードを売るスタイルが、アメリカではよくある光景。みなさん可愛い笑顔で甘酸っぱいレモネードを売っていますね！

fortというのを「秘密基地」というのは意訳しすぎかもしれませんが。。。lemonade standとか、こういう文化的事象は辞書では触れられていないことも多いので、TOEICの限界だけではなく、辞書の限界なんかにも自覚的でありたいです。Did you build a fort when you were a kid?と思い出話を語っているブログがありました。

Years before my father built my playhouse, even a few years before he built the bomb shelter in our basement, I was constructing my own forts out of sheets. They sprouted in our living room, my bedroom, and in the neighbor’s basement.

I would drag chairs and small tables close enough to heavy furniture that sheets could be draped from one object to another to create walls and a ceiling.

部屋での砦作りは、人気のある子供の遊びかもしれません。I know that was one of my favorite things to do.と語っているブログもありました。

日本では「砦」ってあまりなじみがないのですが、アメリカとかではfortがなじみがあるということなんでしょうか。自分はアラモの砦ぐらいしか思いつきません。。。（汗）
