実感を持って落とし込む

よくある批判の一つに「英語資格を持っていてもしゃべれない」というものがあります。この原因のひとつには、英語力はあるけどすぐに反応できる「英語回路」ができていないことがあるでしょう。これは瞬間英作文のようなものである程度克服できると思います。

他に思いつく原因として、実感を持った表現に落とし込めていないというのがあります。意味は分かるけど「もや～」とした感覚が残ってしまう感じの表現は自分から使えるわけありませんよね。TOEICの限界を指摘し、映画やドラマをすすめる人がいるのもこのような点を問題にしたいのかなとも思います。その表現が使われている具体的なシチュエーションにたくさん触れることが、その表現を使うことができる範囲を学ぶことが映画やドラマを見たり、小説を読むことで可能になるからです。

まあ、そこまでしなくても、学びたい表現がピンポイントで分かっていれば、今ではGoogle検索をうまく活用すれば具体的なシチュエーションを数多く学ぶことができます。前のブログでやっていたことではありますが、以前ご紹介したhighly regardedという表現で実践してみます。

highly regardedは「高く評価された」という意味で問題ないですが、じゃあどんな物や人に対して使えばいいのでしょうか、具体例を少しみていきます。“one of the most highly regarded”にJapanとかを足してGoogle検索すれば、日本において最も高く評価されてたものの具体例をいろいろと学ぶことができます。

言われてみるとなんてことない、誰でもすぐに思い浮かぶ例ばかりではないでしょうか。でも、例えばイチローを説明するときにThe most highly regarded outfielderのような表現がさっと出るかは別なんですよね。このギャップは思ったより大きいので、「TOEICのスコアは高くても。。。」なんてことがおきてしまうのでしょう。今回のようにTOEICにあった表現を自分なりの文脈に落とし込むと自分でも使いこなせるものになっていくのではないかと思います。

人物紹介や会社紹介で使えそうな表現であることが実感できます。そうなると、TOEIC的なシチュエーションに落とし込めば、パート3や4なら講演者やゲストを紹介する人物紹介で、パート7なら書評での作家紹介や記事での会社紹介などでしょうか。

自分で自分のことをone of the most highly regardedと言うとしたら広告や売り込みなどで企業が使うことぐらいでしょうか。インドでの三菱電機のウエブサイトに以下のようにありました。その後の文にあるWe offer a wide range of … productsなんかも会社説明に使える表現ですね。

ついでながらone of the most …という表現も合わせて身に付けたいですね。このような褒める表現は当然のこと何かを紹介するときによく使われます。

僕たちはすぐに「最強の資格は何か！」とかの話しをしたがりますが、今ある素材を最大限に役立てる努力をどうしてもおろそかにしがちです。外にばっかり頼っても仕方がないんですよね。駄目なら自分でアレンジすればいいじゃないですか、小学生じゃあるまいし。まあ、そういう人はお得意さんで金払いがいいでしょうから、ビジネス的にはカモなんでしょうけど。。。。

残念ながら英語業界には英語ができる人は多くいないですから、自分で工夫して学んでいくしかないんですよね。学んだ英語表現を自分の経験に、日本での知識に結び付けていく、そいう取組みを意識的にしていけば英語の表現力もついていくのではないかと思います。
