前回の更新から１ヵ月が経ってしまいました。今後は最低でも週１回は更新していこうと思います。たまたまですが、１ヵ月のタイムスパンに絡めてTIMEの記事を一つ紹介します。
今週号のアジア版にはMassimo Sestiniが撮影した地中海をわたってアフリカからヨーロッパに入ろうとする難民の写真が掲載されています。
No Refuge

ヨーロッパの沿岸警備隊はこのような難民船を引き返させていることは驚きですが、日本も難民はほとんど受入れていないですから非難する権利はなさそうです。。。
Italian officials have said that as many as 800,000 refugees were preparing to make the treacherous journey to Italy’s shores from the nearby African coast this summer—a human tide that Italy says it can’t deal with alone. The Italian navy sometimes rescues hundreds of refugees per day on the seas of the Mediterranean, but European coastal patrols have also started resorting to controversial pushback operations, in which refugees are forced to turn around before their boats leave international waters.
どこかで見たことがあると探したところ、６月２０日の難民の日に合わせてEsquireが記事にしていたものとほぼ同じ写真が使われていました。TIMEのウエブサイトでは雑誌に掲載されていた写真がほとんど使われていないのですが、これはEsquireが先に使っていることを配慮してのことでしょうか。

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that 2014 will be a record year for the number of displaced people. With civil war in Syria and unrest among African and Middle-Eastern nations, they anticipate the number will keep climbing. And that means scores of people will load boats—unsafe boats—paying thousands of dollars to starve, risk death, and face unbearable conditions, just to be free of where they once called home, if they had one to begin with.
It has been over 60 years since the Convention for the Status of Refugees convened. It has been nearly 15 since the UN voted to honor "World Refugee Day." But below are photos by Massimo Sestini that call into question how well we are dealing with this crisis worldwide.

まあ、６月２０日がWorld Refugee Day（世界難民の日）であることを知れただけでもよかったです。それに、2014年はシリア内戦や中東やアフリカ大陸の政治動乱で難民が記録的な数になる見込みであることも意識していなかったです。
World Refugee Day - June 20
2013 has been an unprecedented year for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Conflicts in Syria, the Central African Republic and South Sudan, amongst others, have pushed the UNHCR and its partners to their limits. Each day global headlines talk about the harrowing effect of war on millions of families and individuals. Against this backdrop the UNHCR is responding by demonstrating, on the one hand, the heroic nature of refugee survival, and on the other hand, showing the universality of the refugee story.
This year for World Refugee Day 2014, the campaign will continue to emphasize the impact of war on families and place individual refugee family stories at the centre of our work. The call to action is: Join UNHCR and share your refugee story.
The 2014 WRD concept will allow individuals to tell stories about refugee courage and survival - as well as success stories of refugees re-starting their lives in a new country. It will allow the public to view the refugee experience through different experiences from people close to home. Theses efforts aim to remind the public of the strength and courage of refugees by inviting everyone to share refugee stories and tell us if they have one of their own. Through these individual testimonials we can highlight the universal emotions each of us would share if faced with the prospect of losing everything, starting from scratch, or safeguarding our family from violence. Since the concept of “family” varies around the world, we will focus on specific bonds between family members and loved ones.
