The epidemic in West Africa
The war on Ebola
To win it requires a much larger effort in west Africa than the outside world has so far pledged
Oct 18th 2014 | From the print edition
Ebola infects everything. People keep away from fields and markets—so the price of cassava has more than doubled and there is a risk of hunger. Children are orphaned, businesses close, political and tribal resentments flare up. All that will only make Ebola harder to beat. It is a test for the people of west Africa. But it is also a test for a globalising world. The slums of Freetown are closer to the streets of London than they have ever been. Some, like Cuba and Médecins Sans Frontières, have risen to the occasion. Too many still have not.
Some, like Cuba and Médecins Sans Frontières, have risen to the occasion. Too many still have not.
rise to the occasion/challenge
to deal successfully with a difficult situation or problem, especially by working harder or performing better than usual:
a young athlete who can certainly rise to the occasion
The team rose to the challenge.
Cuba’s Impressive Role on Ebola
By THE EDITORIAL BOARDOCT. 19, 2014
Cuba is an impoverished island that remains largely cut off from the world and lies about 4,500 miles from the West African nations where Ebola is spreading at an alarming rate. Yet, having pledged to deploy hundreds of medical professionals to the front lines of the pandemic, Cuba stands to play the most robust role among the nations seeking to contain the virus.
Cuba’s contribution is doubtlessly meant at least in part to bolster its beleaguered international standing. Nonetheless, it should be lauded and emulated.
The global panic over Ebola has not brought forth an adequate response from the nations with the most to offer. While the United States and several other wealthy countries have been happy to pledge funds, only Cuba and a few nongovernmental organizations are offering what is most needed: medical professionals in the field.
Some, like Cuba and Médecins Sans Frontières, have risen to the occasion.
