新公式問題集vol6のTest2のパート７ででてくる固有名詞を確認したところ、英国オックスフォードのNorham Mewsも、ソウルの新村Sinchonも、シドニーのWillow Roadも全部実在していました。さすがに店の名前とかはなかったですが。。。てっきり適当な地名をでっちあげているのだと今まで思っていました。

スコア獲得を狙ったTOEIC学習では、固有名詞は重要視されていません。ただ、やっぱり知識などがないと英語力は広がっていかないんですよね。僕たち日本人は意識しなくても日本の地名についての知識がついています。東京の原宿や渋谷といえば若者の街、丸の内といえばビジネス街、などを自然に連想できるのは背景知識がなせることです。

外国語の場合は、このような無意識の知識が発動できないので文が読めてもイマイチ内容が想像できないというケースが起きてしまいます。やはり、どんなこともどん欲に学んで重層的、立体的に語学力をつけていくようにしていきたいものです。もちろん固有名詞の学習は模試を何周もした後の余興で構わないですが。。。

英語学習と絡めるとすぐに「英語力か、TOEIC対応力か」みたいな話になってしまいますが、そのような問題設定は狭くて不十分なんです。知識などを含めた総合力を高めないといけないというのは、特に将来的に英語を使うことを念頭に置いている方には必須の態度です。
